UPI links a virtual payment address (for example name@bank) to your bank account. When you deposit, the bookmaker's payment partner generates a QR code or a collect request for a fixed amount. You approve it in your UPI app with your PIN, the money leaves your bank account immediately, and the partner credits your betting balance once it matches the payment.
Offshore bookmakers do not hold Indian bank accounts in their own name. Instead they use payment agents and aggregators, which is why the payee shown in your app may be a company or person you have never heard of.
Deposits versus withdrawals
Deposits are almost always instant. Withdrawals are slower because the bookmaker has to approve the request, run checks and then push money back through its agent, usually via IMPS or a UPI payout. See our withdrawal speed guide for how approval queues affect timing.
