UPI Betting Guide for India: How It Works, Limits and Payouts

An honest look at UPI and betting in India: how the payment rails work, typical limits and why transactions fail or get reversed.

Online real-money betting is banned in India under the Online Gaming Act, 2025, and none of the sites we review holds an Indian licence. Check the current rules on our India country page before you deposit.

General information, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the current rules where you live.

How UPI works

Unified Payments Interface is a real-time payment system run by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the oversight of the Reserve Bank of India. It links your bank account to a mobile app, such as a bank's own app, PhonePe, Google Pay or Paytm, and lets you pay using a virtual payment address (your UPI ID, like name@bank) instead of account numbers.

A UPI payment moves money directly from your bank account to the recipient's bank account through NPCI's switch, usually in seconds. You authorise each payment with your UPI PIN. There are three common ways to start a payment:

  • UPI ID: you type the recipient's virtual payment address into your app.
  • QR code: you scan a static or dynamic QR code that contains the recipient's details and sometimes the amount.
  • Intent flow: on a mobile website or app, tapping Pay opens your UPI app with the details pre-filled, and you confirm with your PIN.

Payments are classified as person-to-person (P2P) or person-to-merchant (P2M). Merchants are onboarded by banks and payment aggregators and assigned a merchant category code that tells the bank what kind of business it is. Betting and gambling have their own category, which Indian banks now decline.

How bookmakers take UPI payments

Many offshore bookmakers, including several we review, offer UPI in their cashier for Indian customers. Because card networks and banks already blocked gambling merchant codes, these deposits rarely went to the bookmaker directly. They were typically routed through third-party payment processors or through networks of agents who received money into ordinary merchant or personal accounts.

In practice, a deposit usually meant choosing UPI in the cashier, entering an amount, and then being shown a QR code or a UPI ID belonging to an unrelated business or individual, sometimes with a reference code to enter. Withdrawals worked in reverse: the bookmaker, or an agent, sent money back from yet another account, and the timing depended on that agent rather than on UPI itself.

UPI limits and typical speeds

Limits change and differ by bank; check your own bank's app.
ItemTypical position
Standard P2P limit₹1 lakh per day across UPI, though banks can set lower limits
Daily transaction countMany banks cap P2P transfers at around 20 per day
Higher P2M categoriesSince September 2025, up to ₹5 lakh per transaction in approved categories such as insurance and capital markets; betting is not one of them
New UPI usersSome banks apply lower limits in the first hours or days after registration
Normal settlement speedA few seconds for a successful payment
Refunds for failed debitsUsually auto-reversed within a few working days under RBI turnaround rules

UPI itself is fast. When a betting-related payment takes hours or days, the delay is almost always caused by the intermediary, a bank risk check, or a manual process at the receiving end.

Why betting payments fail or get reversed

  • Merchant blocking: banks and aggregators decline payments to merchants identified as gambling-linked, and lists are updated constantly.
  • Risk engines: unusual patterns, such as many payments to newly created UPI IDs or round sums to unrelated businesses, trigger automatic declines.
  • Receiving account under review: if the account you paid is being reviewed, your money can be stuck or returned days later.
  • Chargebacks and disputes: payments later linked to fraud can be reversed, and bettors who received funds from such accounts can have their own balances held.
  • Limit breaches: exceeding your bank's daily limit or count causes an instant decline.

A payment that shows as debited but not credited at the bookmaker is the most common problem. If the debit fails at the banking level, UPI rules normally return the money automatically. If it reached an agent account, there is no UPI mechanism to recover it, and the bookmaker's customer service is your only route.

Which bookmakers accept UPI

10 of the ten bookmakers we review list UPI in their cashier. Availability can change without notice, so check the deposit page after you register, and compare the minimums and payout routes on our UPI payments page.

  • 1xBet: minimum deposit from about ₹100, withdrawals 15 minutes to 7 days, depending on method.
  • Mostbet: minimum deposit from about ₹100, withdrawals up to 24 hours for most methods; cards can take longer.
  • Melbet: minimum deposit from about ₹100, withdrawals minutes for e-wallets and crypto; up to 3-5 working days for bank methods.
  • 22Bet: minimum deposit from about ₹100, withdrawals 15 minutes for e-wallets; up to 7 business days for cards and bank.
  • Dafabet: minimum deposit from about ₹350, withdrawals 1-4 business days (bank/upi); 15 minutes-2 hours (crypto).
  • Stake: minimum deposit from about ₹100, withdrawals crypto usually minutes to hours after approval; up to 0-2 days.
  • BC.Game: minimum deposit from about ₹450, withdrawals crypto typically minutes to a few hours (up to 6 hours).
  • 4rabet: minimum deposit from about ₹100, withdrawals 1-24 hours (upi/imps/paytm); 1-3 business days (net banking); 15-60 minutes (crypto).
  • 1win: minimum deposit from about ₹350, withdrawals crypto within 24 hours; cards 3-5 business days.
  • Pin-Up Bet: minimum deposit from about ₹900, withdrawals typically up to 2 days, longer if verification is pending.

Step by step: depositing with UPI

The exact screens differ from site to site, but a UPI deposit follows the same pattern everywhere.

  1. Log in to your bookmaker account and open the cashier or Deposit page.
  2. Choose UPI (sometimes listed as UPI QR, UPI ID or under a provider name).
  3. Enter the amount in rupees, checking the minimum and maximum shown for that route.
  4. Scan the QR code or approve the collect request in your UPI app, then enter your UPI PIN.
  5. Wait for the confirmation screen; the balance usually updates within a few minutes. Keep the UTR reference number in case of problems.

Deposits are usually credited instant. If the balance does not update, give it fifteen minutes before contacting support with the transaction ID.

Step by step: withdrawing to UPI

Withdrawals take longer than deposits because the bookmaker reviews each request first. Typical waiting time is 1-24 hours once approved.

  1. Complete identity verification (KYC) before requesting a payout; unverified accounts are usually held.
  2. Open the cashier, choose Withdraw and select UPI or bank transfer (IMPS) as the payout route.
  3. Enter the UPI ID or bank details registered in your own name.
  4. Enter the amount and confirm; some sites ask for a one-time code.
  5. Track the request in your transaction history; payouts typically arrive within 1-24 hours of approval.

UPI for betting: pros and cons

Advantages

  • Deposits normally reflect within minutes
  • No card details are shared with the bookmaker
  • Low minimum deposits, often from about ₹100-₹300
  • Works from any UPI app linked to an Indian bank account

Drawbacks

  • Deposits are often routed to third-party merchant or personal accounts rather than the bookmaker
  • Withdrawals via UPI are not offered by every bookmaker; some use IMPS or bank transfer instead

Fees: usually free; bank may charge. For a side-by-side view of every method we cover, see our withdrawal speed guide.

Staying safe

A few habits keep UPI payments to and from a bookmaker trouble-free, whichever app you use.

  • Do not share your UPI PIN, OTPs or screen with anyone claiming to be support staff.
  • Treat any site that asks you to pay a personal UPI ID, or offers to double your deposit, as a likely scam.
  • Keep records of any past transactions in case your bank asks about them.
